LA 101H
The course description offered in the Penn State University Bulletin:
L A 101H (GWS) Honors Rhetoric and Civic Life (4) Within a liberal arts framework and with attention to public discourse-- speaking, writing, online communication, and visual presentation--this course instructs students in the arts, practices, and principles of rhetoric.
Offered to the first-year students in the second half of the school year, LA 101H is a 4-credit honors course that satisfies the Gen Ed Writing/Speaking (GWS) requirement. If you are a Schreyer Honors student or an aspiring Paterno Fellow, this course is even more important and helpful because "this four-credit course will substitute for the six-credit ENGL 015/030 plus CAS 100 requirement" (Penn State University Bulletin). I strongly recommend it because not only are you doing yourself a favor by killing two birds with one stone, but you also will get to have an integrated experience of the basic foundation courses.
Comprised of different components (oral, written, and digital), this course is designed to teach and train students in rhetorical skills and concepts; critical analysis and interpretation; formation of informed opinions; and persuasive presentation. Through works, such as papers, speeches, multimedia presentations, and blogs, students will improve their performance and skills in public speaking and composing texts effectively.
