APLNG 083T
The course description offered in the Penn State University Bulletin:
First-Year Seminar in Applied Linguistics. (3-credit; GS) Introduction to the application of theories of language to cognition, culture, gender, society, and second language acquisition.
Freshman seminar is a special class that gives the first-year students a chance to experience a small classroom setting in which they learn about research, studies of their particular interests, and even discover new interests. Many students appreciate how the first-year seminars are designed to provide intimacy and a bit of "sneak-peak" of their major/career interests.
In Applied Linguistics, scholars and students study the teaching and learning of languages--first and additional ones--as well as socialization and communication of people. As an interdisciplinary field of study, Applied Linguistics is associated with other relevant academic subjects, such as technology, sociology, and education.

APLNG 083T is an honors freshman seminar that "focuses on the relationship of technology to communication, education, and society" (Dr. Xiaofei Lu).
I first attended the class thinking that I was going learn a lot about linguistics, but it turned out to be very different. The majority of the course was centered around the emerging technologies, which are used for communication, educational purposes, and distribution of information. I loved the strong emphasis on the technology; everything from the textbook to the work submission were operated in online/digital form. For the course, we students were expected to give presentations, upload weekly articles for our Reaction Blog, and be informed on current news of technological advances. We also conducted research of technological applications used in the chosen field of study to compose our final paper. If I had to pick my favorite part of the class, it would be watching and listening to presentations of innovative figures (e.g. TED talks). Not only do you obtain detailed information of their technology showcases but you also observe cases of excellent or poor delivery of speeches. |
